"Clos " is the French term for a private street, enclosed by walls. In English, it would be "close". "Pegase" is French for Pegasus. Right from the get-go at the Clos Pegase wine dinner, I learned something. It was only the beginning.

At the Plaza Cafe, the evening of September 19th, was a wonderfully enriching experience. Jan Shrem, founder and proprietor of the Clos Pegase winery in Carneros, California is not one to leave well enough alone. For him, great wine and food do not a wine dinner make. He also takes you on a 4,000 year journey through the depiction of Bacchus in great works of art.

The guests arrived at 5:30 and as usual , were treated to an assortment of spectacular Plaza Cafe canapes while they sipped a delightful Clos Pegase 2002 Sauvignon Blanc.

A lovely sampling of Lobster-Corn Chowder served in Clam Shells.
Other canapes included Marinated Morsels of Roasted Pineapple topped with Broiled Eel, Mini Portobello 'Pizza' and a luscious Crispy Seafood Ravioli swimming in Lobster Sauce.
After an hour of sipping, munching and pleasant conversation, Mr. Shrem was introduced and the guests took their seats. The lights dimmed and the presentation began. For the next 40 minutes we were treated to an illustrated treatise on art, wine, religion and, of course, Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, and the central theme of the talk. Mr. Shrem's mischievous personality shone through as he peppered the informative presentation with humor, double entendre and just plain fun which set the tone for the rest of the evening.
With the presentation concluded, the dinner proceeded in earnest, with the newly enlightened guests thoroughly enjoying the feast and highly respected wines of Clos Pegase. Find more information about Clos Pegase wines and their spectacular estate at www.closepegase.com
