| At the Plaza Café, our focus has always been to support the efforts of domestic wine producers. We feel that American wines can hold their own against the best that the world has to offer in quality and value for the dollar. It is doubly gratifying for us to see that our local, Long Island producers are finally getting the recognition they deserve and we proudly carry many examples of their product on our list. The Lenz wines are among our favorites.
On November 22nd, 2002 we celebrated the wines of the Lenz Winery and their artisan winemaker, Eric Fry. Like most of the East End wineries, Lenz is relatively small, giving Eric the luxury of paying close attention to each of the varieties he produces. This close attention is evident when you taste his wines. On meeting Eric Fry, something else is immediately eveident; while he has a charming, somewhat quiet and unassuming personality, he can hardly contain his excitement about making wine. As the evening progressed, that excitement became contageous as he described his techniqies and methods for producing what everyone agreed was some of the most interesting and drinkable wines produced on Long Island...or anywhere! One of the points that was stressed again and again was that Eric is always concerned with how his wines go with food and in that regard, the evening was a resounding success. Chef Gulija prepared a sumptous meal and paired the various Lenz vintages with his own creations, perfectly. Without exaggeration, the guests were treated to a enological / culinary tour de force. |
